SHEEPSHEAD BAY
A Small School Run by Turks Takes the StageBy SETH KUGEL

Published: March 21, 2004

It's a rule burned into the memory of many immigrants in New York City: no
speaking your native language in school. But with today's proliferation of
multicultural ideals and bilingual education, most schools at least allow
casual classroom conversation in children's home language.

So the rule against speaking Turkish at the Brooklyn Amity School in
Sheepshead Bay seems odd at first, especially since most of the students and
teachers are Turkish. Notices to parents are not even translated, even
though many parents do not speak English. (The one exception: starting in
the sixth grade, students study Turkish for one or two periods a week.)

But a splash of conservatism and a focus on math and science are central to
the philosophy of the 110-student private school, covering first through
eighth grades. In its first five years, those principles seem to have served
Brooklyn Amity well. Sixteen students won medals in the New York State
Science Olympiad regional competition, placing in 8 of the 17 events, and
competing against public schools across the region. And next year, out of
the 14 students in the eighth grade, two will go to Brooklyn Tech and one to
Stuyvesant, two of the city's most prestigious public high schools.

"I don't want to insult the public schools," said Adem Dokmeci, the vice
principal, who taught in Turkey, Uzbekistan and Indonesia before teaching
summer school in New York, "but I got shocked when I saw student behavior
here. This is the most significant difference between public schools and us.
We teach math, science, language arts, social studies, but also how to be a
perfect citizen and a perfect son or daughter of their parents."

There are few clues on the school's Web site, http://www.brooklynamity.org, that
Amity is run by Turks. Although several non-Turks study there, the school's
national identity is a key to recruitment. Thirteen Turkish-American
students are from Queens and Staten Island, and others further away are
considering a move to Brooklyn. Oner Ayan, a Turkish stockbroker who lives
in Westchester, has already visited the school, even though his son is just
6 months old.

The students recently learned that if they can get through Amity, the future
might be easier. On a visit to colleges in Massachusetts, some eighth
graders found that not all schools enforce discipline the way theirs does.
They were shocked by what they saw students doing in classrooms at Harvard
and M.I.T. "Some were playing solitaire!" said Nergas Can. "Some were
eating!"
